This North East City Guide will hopefully help you pick your next vacation destination. I’ve visited many cities with tons of different histories, weather, and food. For north east cities, the cheapest time to visit will likely be in the winter. However, I am not a fan of the cold and also did not want to risk getting snowed in, so I opt for times that will not be too cold but also not too expensive!
Philadelphia, PA
Philadelphia offers an array of captivating experiences for visitors. Explore the iconic historical sites like Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the Liberty Bell, a symbol of American freedom. Immerse yourself in art and culture at the Philadelphia Museum of Art or stroll through the vibrant Reading Terminal Market for a diverse culinary adventure. The best time to visit Philadelphia, when it’s not expensive, is during the spring and fall when the weather is pleasant and it’s less crowded, which usually means it’s cheaper!

Favorite Things I Ate: Philly cheesesteaks with Cheez Whiz & Scrapple on toast with an egg!
Boston, MA
Boston is a city that beautifully combines history, culture, and vibrant energy. I learned so much by simply existing in this city. Walk the Freedom Trail, visit the historic sites of the American Revolution, and indulge in the city’s renowned seafood. Boston leans heavily into it’s historic side with many of its attractions being Freedom Trail. The best time to visit Boston is early spring. Boston has many popular events so I would definitely avoid going during those times to avoid paying a premium! End of April / Beginning of May was the perfect time! It was still a bit chilly so definitely bring a jacket!
Best for: History & Food!
Favorite Things I Did: The USS Constitution, Harvard Tour, & Historic Cruise!
Favorite Things I Ate: New England Clam Chowder and fresh pasta from Giocomos!
New York City, NY
No North East City Guide would be complete without THE New York City, the “Big Apple”! New York offers an unparalleled range of experiences. From iconic landmarks like Times Square and the Statue of Liberty to world-class entertainment on Broadway, the city is a treasure trove of cultural wonders. The best time to visit is during the spring and fall when the weather is pleasant and the crowds are thinner. New York can get very expensive very quickly! But it can also get VERY cold! Get ready to be dazzled and create unforgettable memories in the heart of the Big Apple. This city wasn’t my favorite place to visit, but I’ve gone now 4 times and it is definitely a city I think everyone should experience!
Best for: Entertainment and Sightseeing!
Favorite Things I Did: Statue of Liberty, Broadway show, and the GIANT Disney store!
Favorite Things I Ate: Pizza!
Washington DC
Washington, DC offers a wealth of historic and cultural experiences for visitors. Explore the iconic landmarks like the White House, the Lincoln Memorial, and the National Mall, where you can immerse yourself in the country’s political and cultural heritage. The city also boasts world-class museums, including the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art, and a diverse culinary scene with unique and flavorful dishes. I visited in March and it was a bit TOO chilly for me. The springtime is very busy and expensive so I’d probably opt for closer to Fall to save some money if possible!
Best for: History & Things to Do!
Favorite Things I Did: Smithsonian, Arlington National Cemetery, & pretty much anything in the National Mall
Favorite Things I Ate: DC isn’t really known for its food! I ate at food trucks and vendors close to the National Mall so that I could spend as much time as possible there!
Portland, ME
Portland, Maine is a charming coastal city known for its picturesque scenery and thriving food scene. Explore the historic Old Port district with its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and waterfront views. Don’t miss a visit to the Portland Head Light, one of the most iconic lighthouses in the United States. Favorite Things I Ate: LOBSTER ROLLS! Expensive but oh so good. There was also this delicious pizza with mashed potatoes on it from Brick
Richmond, VA
Richmond, Virginia is a city rich in history and culture, with plenty of attractions to keep visitors entertained. Take a tour of the American Civil War Museum or explore the grounds the Poe Museum. The best time to visit Richmond is in the fall when the weather is mild and the trees are ablaze with color. No trip to Richmond would be complete without trying some of the city’s famous southern cuisine, like fried chicken or biscuits and gravy. Whether you’re a history buff, an outdoor enthusiast, or a foodie, Richmond has something for everyone to enjoy.
Best for: History & Unique outings!
Favorite Things I Did: The Poe Museum was super cool and had literal cats just chillin and walking around!
Favorite Things I Ate: Again, Richmond, VA isn’t really known for its food. But it is considered the south so the southern cuisine is pretty good!
Chicago, IL
Chicago, the vibrant city on the shores of Lake Michigan, offers a diverse range of attractions and experiences. Don’t miss the iconic Navy Pier, where you can ride the Ferris wheel, enjoy live performances, and take in breathtaking views of the skyline. Explore the renowned Art Institute of Chicago, home to an impressive collection of artwork spanning centuries and continents. For a taste of Chicago’s rich architectural heritage, take an architecture boat tour along the Chicago River and marvel at the city’s stunning skyline. Chicago has some brutal winters so I would advise against planning travel in winter!

Favorite Things I Ate: Deep Dish pizza!! And Au Chaval was SO GOOD!
Hershey, PA
Hershey, Pennsylvania is a sweet escape for all ages. It’s the birthplace of the Hershey’s chocolate empire, and the town is full of chocolate-related attractions, including Hersheypark, Hershey’s Chocolate World, and The Hershey Story Museum. If you’re not a chocoholic, there are other fun things to do like the Hershey Gardens and Hershey Theatre. The best time to visit Hershey is in the summer, as many of the attractions are seasonal and open only from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Best for: Unique Outings & Chocolate! (Good for kids too!)
Favorite Things I Did: The MeltSpa! It was so incredibly relaxing
Favorite Things I Ate: Heath Bar Crusted Salmon from The Chocolatier! Was also totally in love with the pizza from Hershey Italian Lodge!
Salem, MA
Salem, Massachusetts, is a charming coastal town with a rich history dating back to the 1600s. Explore the Salem Witch Museum and learn about the infamous witch trials that took place in 1692. Take a stroll through the picturesque Salem Common, a public park in the heart of town. Favorite Things I Ate: Salem isn’t really known for food, but you can’t go wrong with seafood as it’s so close to the coast!
