Known for its rich history, vibrant arts scene, and world-class cuisine, Philadelphia is a must-visit destination for any traveler. From the iconic Liberty Bell to the famous cheesesteaks, Philadelphia offers a little something for everyone. Get ready to experience the unique blend of old and new that makes Philadelphia one of the most exciting cities in the United States with this Philadelphia 4-day itinerary!
Before we get into the details, here are some helpful tips for your trip! The Go City Philadelphia pass includes nearly every activity on this list, and I highly recommend it as it can save you over 50% and allow you to do more for less money. This also allows you to grab the Hop On & Off Bus which saves a TON of walking! Let’s dive in!
Day 1:
Hello, Philadelphia! This city is HISTORIC, like, I didn’t know what to even start with coming here. After a lot of deliberating, I chose to make a beeline for the U.S. Mint. Take a stroll here to learn all about how coins are made, sound kind of boring to you? Well, look down to see it happening right before your eyes! Right across from the Mint, be sure to locate Ben Franklin’s grave. It’s hard to miss with the sprinkling of penny’s all over it. After visiting the grave, take a stroll through the city and visit Love Park & it’s sister sign, coincidentally at Sister Cities park.
In the afternoon, head to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, home to one of the largest collections of art in the country. The museum features everything from Renaissance masterpieces to modern art installations, and is famous for the “Rocky Steps” out front, which were featured in the iconic movie. Take a victory picture with the Rocky sculpture after your time at the PMA, you’ll deserve it after walking the museum all day. I was apologizing to my feet all night after that!
Day 2:
Hungry? Boy do I have the place for you! High tail it to Reading Terminal Market, a historic indoor market filled with local vendors selling everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. While you’re there grab breakfast from Dutch Eating Place, and make sure you grab some scrapple! I was hesitant to try it but I’m extremely glad I did! It was delicious spread on some toast with an egg! After breakfast & exploring Reading Market, make your way to Independence National Historical Park, home to both the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were both signed. Philadelphia is a city steeped in history and culture, and no trip to this iconic American city is complete without visiting its most famous landmark: the Liberty Bell.
Continue your historic tour with the Museum of the American Revolution! The experience is hands on and has so many interactive exhibits and interesting facts. It was very informative, fun, and I got to touch a bunch of stuff!
After exploring Independence Park and the Museum of the American Revolution, put on your walking shoes
because this is where we start the historic walk of a lifetime! Thankfully we’ve created a walking path for you to follow if needed! Take a stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old City, lined with historic buildings and boutique shops, visit the Betsy Ross house, Fireman’s Hall, the Edgar Allen Poe House, and more! Stop for lunch at one of the city’s famous cheesesteak spots, such as Pat’s King of Steaks or Geno’s Steaks both right across from each other. I’d recommend trying both cheesesteaks! They are incredible and both very different from one another. Make sure to try it with the Cheez Whiz! After your history walk, take a break with a quick snack at Reading Terminal Market, I highly recommend grabbing a couple cookies from Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, or a cannoli from Termini Bros!
Day 3:
Spend your final day in Philadelphia exploring Eastern State Penitentiary. The penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. The prison is now a National Historic Landmark and museum, offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of American corrections. Visit the eye opening exhibit that talks about today’s prison system on your way out!
In the evening, head to the Franklin Institute. This takes a good bit of time, and every second is worth it. When I was there, there was a special Disney exhibit and it was worth every extra penny! If they have a special exhibit going on, I would highly recommend it. Learn about Ben Franklin and visit his massive statue inside! I loved all the exhibits, all very interactive and fun to explore! This is an amazing place for both kids and adults.
Day 4: HERSHEY!
Okay, so Hershey is only a short ride away. Take the amtrak and enjoy a leisurely train ride through Pennsylvania! Stop by Hershey Chocolate World, take a trolley tour, make your own chocolate bar, go through the little factory ride, there’s so much to do here! Be sure to grab a milkshake! Grab lunch at the Chocolatier and try out the heath bar crusted Salmon. It was INCREDIBLE. I still dream about it sometimes! After your stomach is full, head to the Hershey Story Museum to learn even more about the history of the famous chocolate bars. Milton Hershey was extremely fascinating and super passionate about what he did. It’s definitely a story to remember!
In the evening, relax at the MeltSpa for a dark chocolate hand treatment. Get the most chocolatey manicure and have your hands smell like delicious chocolate! After a long day of activities, be sure to visit one of the best italian restaurants I’ve had in the U.S, Hershey Italian Lodge, grab some delicious pizza and pierogies!
